“I Was Once Beaten By Public For Sleeping Inside A Public Bathroom. It Did Hurt My Skin But Not My Dreams.”
This attitude helped Chris Gardner become the man he is today. Gardner works as a stockbroker, writer and motivational speaker. He also helps out with nonprofit organizations such as the National Education Foundation and the National Fatherhood Initiative. He encourages people every day to go out and fulfill their dreams. Gardner showed the world no matter what problems someone is facing; they can achieve with perseverance. The Genius has the strength, inspiration and passion of a hero.
“It’s ok to FAIL it’s not ok to Quit”.
The strength he had in himself, made him the hard working man he is today. Survivor Chris had the strength to live through a family with abuse. Gardner credits his mother, despite her misdeeds, with transmitting to him the ‘spiritual genetics’ that guided him through the traumas of his upbringing. Although Gardner had been abused, he did not let that affect his future in a bad way. He kept trying his best, knowing things would get better. The man had faced more hardships when he got older. He was glad to take custody of his son. He had vowed, during his own troubled childhood, never to leave his own children without a father. Gardner and his toddler son slept some nights at a cheap hotel, under his office desk, in the park, or–on a couple of occasions–behind a locked bathroom door in a Bay Area Rapid Transit station. He told his colleagues nothing about his situation. Not only did Gardner have the strength to take care of his own child, but he even took care of him during the time they were both homeless. Gardner had the strength to carry on with getting trained for a livelihood that would support him and his child so that they could live a better life. Chris Gardner had proven the strength that he has when he went through the hardships of abuse and homelessness.
If you have watched the movie Pursuit of Happyness, then you know who Chris Gardner is. The movie is based on his life, a man who is the definition of determination. He now specializes in speaking engagements and helps others reach their full potential.
A Terrible Childhood
The bright Chris was born in Milwaukee on February 9, 1954. He had a harrowing childhood with an absentee father and a violently abusive stepfather, Fredie Triplett. In addition, his uncle Henry a huge inspiration of young Chris, died when he was nine. Although Gardener was abused a lot, he didn’t let that affect his future in a bad way.
Blast From The Past
One Christmas when Chris was a teenager, an intoxicated Triplett burst into the bathroom while Chris was taking a bath. With a shotgun in his hand, the oppressor ordered Chris to leave the house. He frighteningly ran out of the house naked and soaking wet into the frigid Wisconsin winter. He had already kicked Chris’s mother out of the house. Gardner said that the event still stays on his mind.
Now homeless, Gardner struggled to find shelter. But he was lucky enough as he got accomodation at the Glide Memorial Church Centre.
As a teenager, Chris had done odd jobs like washing dishes at a restaurant, and attending to elderly patients at a nursing home, where he used to handle their bed pans.
Finally, Chris Gardner married Sherry Dyson, a Virginia native and an educational expert in mathematics. With his acquired knowledge, experience and contacts within the medical field, it appeared Gardner had his medical career plans laid out before him. However, with ten years of medical training ahead of him and with changes in healthcare just on the horizon, he realized that the medical profession would be vastly different by the time he could practice medicine.
Beginning Of The Adventurous Career As An Entrepreneur
Ultimately in 1987, he founded his own brokerage firm, Gardner Rich & Co. which he has since transformed into Christopher Gardner International Holdings, which directed the projects overseas, primarily in South Africa.
In May 2006, his memoir ”The Pursuit of Happyness” was published which was soon adapted into an Academy-Award nominee film starring Will Smith as Chris Gardner and Jaden Smith as his son, Chris Jr.
Apart from running his million dollar firm, Chris is currently on the threshold of writing another prospective bestseller and actively involving himself in many philanthropic and social causes dealing with homelessness and domestic abuse.
The Genius teaches people that you are capable of what you set your mind to.
“I was homeless, but I wasn’t hopeless. I knew a better day was coming.”
Even when he had nothing and became homeless with his son, he never lost hope. Staying strong and believing in himself helped Gardner overcome his obstacles. His own experience conveys powerful messages about breaking destructive cycles, commitment to parenting, and achieving goals through perseverance. He disdains the phrase ‘motivational speaking’:
“I see it as a matter of shared empowerment because I’m getting as much from the audiences as I am giving to them, and one of the things I’ve learned is men are in so much pain.”
Gardner moves the audience with his story so they know they have the chance to achieve whatever they desire no matter the circumstances. The fighter Chris tries to encourage the people that they need to try their best in order to succeed in their lives. It gives everyone the inspiration that they can conquer their dreams.
“The World Is Your Oyster. It’s Up To You To Find The Pearls.”
Chris Gardner became successful because not only is he good at his job but he has a passion for it too. He was trying to get his job as a stockbroker he was chosen between other people. What he had that the others did not was his passion for his job.
“It’s passion. Passion is everything. In fact, you’ve got to be borderline fanatical about what you do. Passion is not teachable. As a communications coach, I can help clients craft and deliver a powerful story, but I can’t create passion. But it’s passion that separates the electrifying presenters from the average ones. I’m absolutely convinced of it.”
Gardner has passion for his job, which is why he is so great at what he does. The magnate found an activity that is enjoyable and he looks forward to everyday rather than a job he would dread to go through. He proves that anything is possible if you work hard for what you are doing and none else has to want it but yourself. The Genius shows that to be great, you can not only be good at what you do, but you have to have the passion for it.
His Advice To Entrepreneurs And Those Seeking A Career Change?
“Be bold enough to find the one thing that you are passionate about. It might not be what you were trained to do. But be bold enough to do the one thing. Nobody needs to dig it but you.”
He teaches people that you are capable of whatever you set your mind to. Staying strong and believing in himself helped Gardner overcome his obstacles.
“It’s not just my story. It’s the story of a lot of people who grew up and took a lot of crap – and decided, ‘I’m going the other way.”
Teaching people that he knows you may have issues, but you decide if you want to live a better life. Gardner teaches that with the strength and passion, you can dream the world. What do you think makes Chris a Genius?
Simple, it’s the realization that it is ok to fall down, but it is never acceptable to give up. Many a times we frown over petty things like when we do not understand certain words in the English language. It makes us feel inferior to others. Isn’t that what an ordinary person would feel?
Then what makes you extraordinary like Chris?
